It was one of the most stunning games in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 and the fans of Delhi Capitals (DC) were left virtually fooled on the April Fool’s Day. Chasing a moderate target of 167 in 20 overs, Shreyas Iyer’s side lost their last seven wickets for eight runs to concede the game in Mohali to Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 14 runs. One could sense the impact the loss had on the visitors as Iyer said after the match that he was left “speechless”.

The KXIP, however, had a lot of admirers. Former Sri Lankan captain and one of the game’s greatest Kumar Sangakkara lauded Punjab’s David Miller who scored 43 off 30 balls in the game after the hosts slumped to 58 for 3 to take them to a respectable total.

Sangakkara, who had played for the KXIP in the past besides the now-defunct Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad, praised the South African hitter’s strategy of going to the offensive from the word go. “David Miller’s strategy has always been to attack. I don’t think he has a hugely successful defensive game because aggression is the best form of defence for him. He looks to capitalize and pick off the spinners and deposit them into the stands,” the 41-year-old, who is a Star Sports Select Dugout Expert, was quoted as saying on ‘Dugout’.

Sangakkara praises Kings’ team formation decision

The former southpaw also spoke on why West Indian Chris Gayle did not play the game against the DC. He praised the KXIP’s team formation saying they didn’t compromise on their bowling to bolster the batting. “They understood that a well-balanced bowling attack that can take wickets is essential in IPL and have accordingly kept their bowling intact. I think it’s a very positive move, it might not always work for them, but I like the attitude.”

The Kings have done well so far winning three of their four matches and are second best in the points table only to Chennai Super Kings who are yet to lose a game.
