The Mumbai Indians (MI) went to the second position of the points table in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). They beat the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 46 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The home team didn’t have the services of MS Dhoni and the Yellow Army clearly strained to find its feet. Some stupendous bowling from the visiting team didn’t allow Suresh Raina’s men to get away.

Rohit shepherds Mumbai

The Super Kings won the toss and elected to field first on a wicket that didn’t look like a belter. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock started positively, but Deepak Chahar got rid of De Kock after the southpaw scored 15 off 9 balls. Thereafter, Evin Lewis, who was playing his first match in this IPL, joined Rohit in the middle and put on a useful 75 runs off 57 balls. Rohit went on to score his fifty in 36 balls.

Mitchell Santner broke the ominous-looking stand as he nipped out Lewis, who scored a 30-ball 32. Krunal Pandya tried to take on Imran Tahir only to perish. Rohit steadied the ship and notched 67 runs from 48 balls with six boundaries and three over-boundaries. Santner got his prized scalp. Hardik Pandya played some blistering strokes to remain not out on 23 off 18 and guided his team to 155 in 20 overs.

The Super Kings slump to defeat

Shane Watson started CSK’s run-chase in a positive manner with a couple of fours, but Lasith Malinga got his prized wicket. Suresh Raina succumbed to yet another failure as Hardik sent him packing. The likes of Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav and Dhruv Shorey couldn’t make an impact and got out for 0, 6 and 5 respectively. At the other end, Murali Vijay didn’t throw his wicket away by any means.

He blended caution with aggression and kept the scoreboard ticking. Unfortunately, from CSK’s perspective, Bumrah removed him. Vijay managed 38 from 35 with three fours and one six. In the last five overs, CSK needed 68 runs and had Dwayne Bravo and Santner in the middle. The hosts kept losing wickets pretty quickly and eventually fell short by a long way. They were bowled out for 109 in the 18th over.
