Rahul Chahar was brought by the Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 1.90 crores and was also retained ahead of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 19-year-old hasn’t disappointed and has picked up nine wickets in eight games at an impressive economy of 6.43. Yesterday, he played an important role in Mumbai’s 46-run victory against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

At the Chepauk, Rahul didn’t pick up a wicket but ended up conceding only 21 runs at an economy of 5.25. After his team’s thumping victory against the table-toppers, the pugnacious potential talked about the steps he took from his childhood in order to grow as a spinner. He watched videos of Shane Warne after which he has asked to adjust his bowling as per the generation change.

“When I was a kid, my uncle used to get me DVDs of Warne. I was eight then. I started bowling looking at Warne. I was told to be quick as the generation was changing. If I turn the ball a little slow, it may not work,” Chahar was quoted as saying to the reporters after the crucial encounter.

I learnt a lot from Shane Bond Zaheer Khan

Rahul Chahar also expressed gratitude to legends like Shane Bond and Zaheer Khan for helping him grow as a cricketer. “I learnt a lot of things from Shane Bond, and now, Zaheer Khan is also here. He helped me a lot too. Both of them gave me confidence during nets,” Rahul, who’s also the cousin of Deepak, who’s playing for the three-time IPL champions CSK.

Talking about Mumbai’s resounding victory against the MS Dhoni-less Super Kings yesterday night, the Young Turk mentioned: “It was very important for us to win this one. The wicket of Shane Watson was crucial. Now that there are crucial games ahead, it was important for him [Rohit] to strike form. He can win you matches single-handedly.”

Rahul is next expected to play MI’s game against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the second of tomorrow’s doubleheader.
