The 31-year-old Rohit Sharma has been a fulcrum of the Mumbai Indians (MI) setup ever since he was drafted into the franchise. He is currently the third highest run-getter in the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) history after Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina. The right-hander has notched a mammoth 4493 runs in 173 matches at an average of 31.86 and with a highest score of 109 not out.

He is also the most successful captain in the T20 tournament, having won the trophy for his franchise as much as three times- 2013, 2015 and 2017 respectively. Going into the next edition of the tournament, Rohit is again expected to deliver the goods for Mumbai. The team is scheduled to play its first match against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, March 24.

In the meantime, the Nagpur-born cricketer has revealed his batting position for the next season. In the previous seasons, the experienced campaigner has been seen batting in the middle order. However, the move didn’t quite work out for him as he got out cheaply on a number of occasions. Therefore, next time around, Sharma he would be open the batting for his team.

A topsy-turvy campaign in 2018

Sharma didn’t have the best of seasons in 2018. He played 14 matches and scored 286 runs at an average of 23.83 at a strike-rate of 133.02. He batted both in the top and middle order. Nevertheless, batting in the middle only saw him failing a number of times. His top score of 94 came against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Rohit is also expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming World Cup, which is scheduled to start on May 30 in England and Wales. The fact that Rohit is expected to open the batting even in the mega event may also have prompted him to open the batting in the T20 extravaganza.
