The wooden-spooners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered their fifth victory of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) on October 29, Thursday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium against Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets. A KKR loss has paved the way for Mumbai Indians (MI) to be the first team to qualify for the playoffs.

It also ensures that the teams Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad are very much in the race of making it to the Top 4. Losing the toss, the Knight Riders were sent to bat first. It was a fluent start for KKR as the opening batsman Shubman Gill started hitting from the very first ball of the game.

Though the right-hander lost his wicket in the 8th over when the team was reeling at 53, his counterpart Nitish Rana launched an assault on the Super Kings bowlers as he played a sensational knock of 87 runs off 61 deliveries at a strike rate of 142.62. His innings included 10 fours and 4 sixes. Rana didn’t get the required support from Sunil Narine and Rinku Singh as both the batsmen lost their wickets cheaply.

But the small partnership between Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan in the fag end of the innings helped the team collect 66 runs off the final 5 overs. This combined effort by the batting line-up resulted in KKR posting an above-par total of 172 on the board. As far as the bowling unit is concerned, Lungi Ngidi emerged as the highest wicket-taker for CSK with 2 important wickets while Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja, and Karn Sharma had one each to their name.

Ravindra Jadeja helps CSK win the match

There was a change to CSK’s winning combination as Shane Watson came to open the innings with Ruturaj Gaikwad while chasing 173 runs. Just like KKR, CSK also lost its first wicket in the eight over but in the middle the match-winning knock by Gaikwad of 72 off 53 including 6 fours and 2 sixes helped the team shift the momentum towards its side.

Though the Yellow Army stumbled a bit as they needed 30 off the last 12 balls, a quickfire splendid innings by Ravindra Jadeja of 31* off 11 helped the Kings in winning the match by 6 wickets.
