Vying for a second victory in their IPL 2020 campaign, two heavyweights– Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab– locked horns in the thirteenth edition of the tournament. But in the end, it was Rohit Sharma’s men who registered a thumping victory over the Punjab franchise as they clinched the encounter by 48 runs.

Both MI and KXIP were deprived of a victory by the narrowest of margins after enduring the Super Over drama. While the Mumbai side succumbed to Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Super Over, KL Rahul’s men bowed down to Delhi Capitals.

To shrug off their unlucky defeats, both sides battled each other at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. KXIP skipper Rahul, after winning the toss, elected to field first as fans witnessed the Quinton de Kock-Rohit Sharma pair walking in the middle. KXIP had an impressive start in the first over itself as Sheldon Cottrell pulled off his salute on the fifth delivery after bowling De Kock out. MI were struck with another blow when Suryakumar Yadav had to walk back after falling short of his crease.

MI skipper Rohit Sharma scored an impressive 45-ball 70

After suffering two early setbacks, the MI run-flow was guided by skipper Rohit and in-form Ishan Kishan. Enduring KXIP’s bowling unit, the duo stitched a 50-run stand to save their side from a batting debacle.

While Rohit slammed an impressive 45-ball 70, Ishan stitched a steady 28 off 32. But after the departure of Rohit and Ishan, it eventually was the Kieron Pollard-Hardik Pandya duo which set the stadium on fire with their fireworks at death. Pollard, hammering 4 sixes and 3 fours, scored a 20-ball 47 and Pandya assisted him well by scoring a quick-fire 30 off just 11 deliveries. The explosive show from both the power hitters steered MI to a dominant 191-run total.

In reply, the Punjab side suffered an early blow when Jasprit Bumrah shattered the defence of an in-form Mayank Agarwal. Karun Nair also departure in the next over on a duck. Skipper Rahul tried to save the sinking ship but he also had to walk back as he got bowled while trying to pull off a paddle sweep.

After the departure of the top-order trio of KXIP, Nicholas Pooran rose to the occasion and stitched a vital 41-run stand with Glenn Maxwell. The West Indies international, however, departed after scoring 44, with KXIP needing 87 runs in the last six overs.

Succumbing to the pressure, Maxwell also got out while trying to clear the rope off Rahul Chahar’s delivery. Chahar had a memorable day with the ball as he scalped two wickets while conceding 26 runs in his four overs. In the end, all eyes were on James Neesham and Sarfaraz Khan to pull off something incredible.

But KXIP shattered like a stack of cards in the end, managing to post only 143 runs on the scoreboard. Following MI’s win, Twitter erupted with wishes for Rohit Sharma. Fans also heaped praise on scintillating knocks of Pollard and Hardik.
