Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn wants KL Rahul to take captaincy duties of the Royal Challengers Bangalore after their incumbent skipper Virat Kohli steps down next year. Kohli recently announced his decision to leave RCB captaincy after the conclusion of the 2021 edition of the league, a decision he took only three days after announcing that he would also step down as India’s T20I skipper after the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Dale Steyn, who has been with RCB in the IPL from 2008-10 before another stint in 2019-20, told ESPNcricinfo that RCB must get back their old player KL Rahul, who currently leads Punjab Kings, into the mix in next year’s mega-auction. Notably, Rahul plied his trade for RCB twice himself – in 2013, followed by 2016-18.

In a discussion before RCB’s clash against Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians, Steyn said: “If RCB are going to look at a long-term contender as captain, they should be looking within their own borders. The name I’ve got is an ex-Bangalore player. It’s KL Rahul. I just have a feeling he is going to return back to Bangalore in next year’s auction.”

I don’t think AB de Villiers is the right way to go: Dale Steyn

Steyn stated that RCB must look beyond AB de Villiers as even though he is a phenomenal player, he is at the end of his career and won’t be able to lead the team for long.

“I don’t think AB de Villiers is the right way to go. I think he is a phenomenal player. But he is at the end of his career. I think he is a great leader. But if RCB are going to look at a long-term contender as captain, they should be looking within their own borders. It’s KL Rahul. Steyn said.

Steyn’ co-panelist Sanjay Manjrekar had similar views regarding AB de Villiers, although his choice for RCB captaincy were different than that of Steyn’s.

“How many years could you get out of AB de Villiers as the captain? So, I would like to have someone who has at least three years to offer. Pollard is one guy who has the leadership qualities. Suryakumar Yadav and David Warner are my three contenders,” Manjrekar stated.
