Delhi Capitals couldn’t have asked for a better start to their campaign in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing against three-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium, DC easily clinched the one-sided affair by seven wickets. Delhi’s opening duo of Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan put the CSK bowlers to shame by hammering the ball all over the park and directed Delhi towards a clean run chase.

Entering the contest, the young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant walked in the middle for the first time as the skipper and won his first toss to invite CSK to put the total on the board first. The Super Kings got off to a disappointing start as they lost both the opening batsmen within three overs. This was followed by Moeen Ali and Suresh Raina stitching a crucial partnership of 53 runs.

Making a comeback in the CSK set-up, Raina looked in good touch but a terrible mix-up in the middle while batting alongside Ravindra Jadeja resulted in the left-hander marching back to the pavilion after scoring 54 runs off 36 deliveries. Jadeja and Sam Curran applied the finishing touches by adding 26 and 34 runs to the scoreboard. Thus, CSK was successful in posting a total of 188 runs on the scoreboard.

Delhi’s opening duo launches an assault on CSK bowlers

For Delhi, the pace duo of Avesh Khan and Chris Woakes was the pick of the bowlers as they scalped two wickets each while Ravi Ashwin and Tom Curran had one each to their name.

Chasing 189, Delhi had a dream start as both the opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw were in spectacular form as they took the Super Kings bowlers to the cleaners. CSK scalped their first wicket of the evening in 14th over, when Delhi was reeling at a score of 138 runs. The second wicket came in the form of Shikhar Dhawan in the 17th over, however, it was too late as the game had gone too far away from the MS Dhoni-led side.

Both Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw shined with the willow as they played sublime knocks of 85 and 72 runs respectively. Rishabh Pant also played a small cameo in the end and finished the game for the team by hitting a four.
