After two consecutive losses, defending champions Mumbai Indians finally returned to the winning ways as they registered a spectacular victory over Rajasthan Royals while playing at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. It was a comprehensive performance by MI as they outplayed the Royals by a stunning seven wickets.

Entering the contest, RR made no change to their winning line-up from their previous encounter while Mumbai made heads turn with their decision of replacing Ishan Kishan with Nathan Coulter-Nile. The toss went Rohit Sharma’s way and he elected to field first. Batting first, Rajasthan got off to a decent start as Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal looked in a good rhythm.

Buttler finally regained his form as he played a sublime knock of 41 runs off 32 balls while Jaiswal added 32 runs in just 20 deliveries. However, two back-to-back wickets slowed down the pace of RR’s innings. Though skipper Sanju Samson played a sensible knock of 42 runs, RR could post only 171 runs on the board in their 20 overs.

For Mumbai, Rahul Chahar was the pick of the bowler with two crucial wickets of both the opening batters. Apart from Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult picked one wicket each.

Quinton de Kock regains his form with the willow

Chasing 172, Mumbai received the first hiccup in the sixth over as they lost their skipper Rohit Sharma while he was playing at 14 runs. This was followed by another wicket of Suryakumar Yadav who marched back to the pavilion after scoring 16 runs off 10 balls. However, the defending champions had nothing to worry about.

The opening batter, Quinton de Kock, who was experiencing a torrid run in IPL 2021 thus far, looked in fine touch. Opening the innings, de Kock played a blistering knock of not out 70 runs off just 50 balls. His innings included six boundaries and two maximums at a strike rate of 140. He was aptly supported by Krunal Pandya, who was promoted to bat at number four.

Pandya added 39 runs to the scoreboard in 26 balls. The same was followed by Kieron Pollard applying the finishing touches by collecting 16 runs in eight deliveries. The combined effort by the bowlers and the batters resulted in the franchise winning the match by seven wickets.
