After Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) become the third team to add two points in front of their name in the points table. The third match of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a batting delight as the fans saw some spectacular knocks from the KKR and SRH batters.

Nitish Rana’s knock of 80 runs overshadowed the effort by Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairstow as the Knight Riders registered victory by 10 runs. Entering the contest, David Warner won the toss and invited KKR to put the total on the board. Batting first, the two-time champion got off to an explosive start as both Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana started hitting from the very first ball.

However, Gill departed after scoring just 15 runs but the Knight Riders had nothing to worry about as Rahul Tripathi and Rana stitched a crucial partnership of 93 runs. Tripathi played a sublime knock of 53 runs off 29 deliveries while Rana emerged as the highest run-getter with 80 runs off 56 balls including nine boundaries and four maximums.

The finishing touch was applied by the wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik who added 22 runs to the scoreboard while facing nine balls. Thus, KKR posted 187 runs in their 20 overs after losing six wickets. For Hyderabad, the spin duo of Mohammed Nabi and Rashid Khan were the highest wicket-takers with two wickets each.

Manish Pandey and Abdul Samad takes the match deep for SRH

Chasing 188, SRH had a torrid start as their new opening pair of David Warner and Wriddhiman Saha failed to give a good start. Both the players departed back to the pavilion within three overs with the team reeling at the score of 10 for two. This was followed by Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairstow lighting up the gloomy SRH dug-out by their sublime knocks.

However, Jonny’s dismissal in the 13th over, when the batsman was playing on 55, initiated a collapse of the batting line-up. Pandey seemed like the lone warrior in the middle as Nabi and Vijay Shankar lost their wickets quickly. The match seemed far away from SRH with the team needing 38 runs off the last 12 balls.

Meanwhile, Abdul Samad ignited some hopes as he targeted Pat Cummins in the 19th over and the equation came down to 22 for the last six balls. However, disciplined bowling by Andre Russell in the last over ensured that KKR won the game by 10 runs.
