Delhi Capitals got back their top spot in the points table in the ongoing edition of the IPL. The Rishabh Pant-led unit has won eight out of 10 matches with a net run rate of 0.711. On Saturday, they beat the Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The Royals, in the meantime, have slipped to sixth in the table and need to string together a few victories.

Capitals get up to a competitive score

The Capitals got off to a nervy start after being put in to bat first. Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan perished early as DC managed only 36 runs in the powerplay. Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer steadied the ship for their team with a partnership of 62 runs off 45 balls. Mustafizur Rahman castled Pant, who made a run-a-ball 24, to break the stand. Iyer went on to notch a 32-ball 43 with one four and two sixes.

However, it was Shimron Hetmyer’s 16-ball 28 that injected impetus into the Capitals’ innings. The southpaw smashed five fours in his knock before becoming Mustafizur’s second victim. After he got out, Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel scored 14 and 12 respectively to guide DC. Apart from Mustafizur, Chetan Sakariya also got two wickets. Kartik Tyagi was expensive as he leaked 40 in his four overs.

Samson’s knock goes in vain

The run-chase started on a terrible note for the Royals. Avesh Khan got rid of Liam Livingstone to strike first blood. Thereafter, Anrich Nortje used the DRS to good effect and sent Yashasvi Jaiswal back to the hut. David Miller tried to charge down at Ravi Ashwin only to see himself stumped. Sanju Samson was given out once, but later replays showed that the ball had brushed his shoulders.

Samson went on to notch a half-century off 39 balls, but the required run-rate was climbing at an alarming rate. The Royals’ skipper went on to stay unbeaten on 70 off 53 with eight fours and one six. To his dismay, he didn’t get much support from the others. Mahipal Lomror was the second-highest scorer for the Royals. Each of the Capitals’ bowlers got a wicket with Nortje picking up two.
