Two teams that have some heavyweight names on paper but have not managed to get their acts together so far will face each other in the 39th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Both the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) sides are yet to post a win in IPL Phase 2, and will desperately be looking for a reversal of fortunes.

The Mumbai Indians (MI) have once again proven that they are slow starters. But then, with just 5 more league matches to go in IPL Phase 2 for them, time is running out for the ‘Men in Blue’. In their previous match, the Mumbai side had no answers to a blistering 53 off 30 deliveries from Venkatesh Iyer, and an equally impactful 74* off 42 deliveries from Rahul Tripathi, as the Kolkata Knight Riders crushed them by 7 wickets.

On the other hand, the RCB side went down to the CSK outfit in their previous rubber. The MS Dhoni-led Chennai side comfortably breezed past the Bangalore outfit with 6 wickets to spare. The openers fired for the RCB side in their last game. Kohli looked fluent in his 41-ball stay where he scored 53, and Padikkal scored a classy 70. But then, the lack of runs from the willows of AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell is hurting the Bangalore outfit.

For Mumbai too, it was their openers who did an excellent job in their encounter against Kolkata. Rohit Sharma and Quinton De Kock put on a 78-run opening stand off 9.2 overs, but the middle order floundered for the five-time IPL champions. The Mumbai Indians side needs contributions from the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan if they want to post a big total on the board.

And, this match will pit two of the biggest names in India cricket today against each other. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will cross paths, and this clash comes at a time when Kohli has decided that he will step down as the Indian T20I captain, and Rohit is the man touted as his successor.

Both Mumbai and Bangalore will look to avoid a hat trick of losses in the second phase of the IPL. So, which side will outdo the other, in this monumental battle?

Pitch and Conditions

Batsmen can surely score runs on this surface if they apply themselves. The spinners will get the ball to grip, but as Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan showed in the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals, batsmen who show patience can succeed on this pitch.

Playing Combinations for RCB vs MI

Royal Challengers Bangalore

For Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kyle Jamieson might make a return after missing out against CSK. Wanindu Hasaranga has been unimpressive in 2 consecutive matches, and RCB might want to bolster their middle order by including an extra batsman in Rajat Patidar in place of Hasaranga. The rest of the line-up is likely to remain the same.

Predicted XI: Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli (C), AB de Villiers Glenn Maxwell, Rajat Patidar, Srikar Bharat (WK) Kyle Jamieson/Tim David, Harshal Patel, Navdeep Saini/Shahbaz Ahmed, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal

Mumbai Indians

If Hardik Pandya is fit, he will replace Saurabh Tiwary in the playing XI. Other than that, the rest of the players pick themselves.

Predicted XI: Quinton de Kock (WK), Rohit Sharma (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya/Saurabh Tiwary, Adam Milne, Rahul Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah Trent Boult
