Delhi Capitals, on Saturday, managed to garner their ninth win of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. Along with Chennai Super Kings, Rishabh Pant and Co. are almost certain to end in the top two. In their previous game, the Capitals beat the Mumbai Indians by four wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. As far as MI are concerned, they kept gasping for breath in the event.

Avesh Khan steals the show

After winning the toss and electing to field first, the Capitals did an excellent job as MI could only manage 129 for eight. Avesh Khan struck first blood, getting rid of Rohit Sharma, caught by Kagiso Rabada at third man. Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav tried to inject some momentum in the innings. Even as Yadav scored a 26-ball 33, de Kock perished after getting 19 runs off 18 balls.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel accounted for both wickets. In the middle overs, MI played around 10 dot balls in a row, but Jayant Yadav’s four-ball 11 propelled their score. Avesh Khan was exceptional for DC as he picked up three wickets at an economy of 3.75. One of them was a searing Yorker to castle Hardik Pandya. Anrich Nortje was at his best as he got one wicket and bowled one maiden.

Iyer and Ashwin take charge

The Capitals didn’t make a great start as Kieron Pollard ran out Shikhar Dhawan at the striker’s end. In the third over, the other opener Prithvi Shaw fell prey to Krunal Pandya. Thereafter, Nathan Coulter-Nile castled Steve Smith around the legs. Rishabh Pant came out firing on all cylinders and smashed three fours and one six. The southpaw scored 26 before Jayant Yadav got his wicket.

Axar Patel became Trent Boult’s first victim. When the sixth wicket went down, Mi still needed 37 runs, although at less than a run-a-ball. The onus was on Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Ashwin to take DC home. The duo rotated the strike and kept their team in the game. The Capitals needed four runs to win off the last over and Ravi Ashwin smashed a six over deep mid-wicket to take MI over the line.
