Royal Challengers Bangalore, on Sunday, became the third team after Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals to qualify for the playoffs in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. Virat Kohli and Co. defeated Punjab Kings by six runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. As far as the Punjab-based team is concerned, their chances of qualification in the next round isn’t on their own hands anymore.
Glenn Maxwell steps up
After electing to bat first, RCB racked up the highest score in Sharjah this season of the IPL. The Challengers got themselves up to 164 for the loss of seven wickets. Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal stitched together a partnership of 68 for the opening wicket off 58 balls. Thereafter, Moises Henriques pushed the Challengers back a bit. The medium pacer picked up three quick wickets.
He got rid of Kohli, Padikkal and Dan Christian. From there on, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers put on 73 runs to put RCB on the driver’s seat. Maxwell carried on with his impressive form as he churned out 57 runs off 33 balls with three fours and four sixes. De Villiers also cleared the ropes twice. Veteran Mohammed Shami restricted PBKS to some extent as he picked up three wickets.
PBKS falls short
PBKS started their run-chase in an emphatic manner. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal put on 91 for the opening wicket off 10.5 overs. The duo had well and truly led the platform. Shahbaz Ahmed gave RCB their first breakthrough, pinning Rahul, who made a 35-ball 39. Agarwal, on the other hand, went on to score a fifty off 36. However, he needed to bat until the end for Punjab to win the game.
The right-hander scored 57 off 42 balls with six fours and two sixes before Chahal got rid of him. Chahal also sent back Nicholas Pooran cheaply. Chahal didn’t stop and pinned Sarfaraz Khan for a golden duck. Aiden Markram looked promising at 20 after which George Garton dismissed him. Shahrukh Khan and Moises Henriques played the big shots, but PBSK could managed only 158.
