Although Mumbai Indians failed to qualify for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 playoffs, their effort entertained the fans thoroughly. They defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 42 runs in their last league-stage game, ending their campaign on a winning note. However, this victory won’t please the five-time champions as they needed something much more.

In order to qualify for the playoffs, MI needed to defeat SRH by at least 171 runs. Moreover, had SRH won the toss and elected to bat, Mumbai’s hopes would have shattered even before the start of the game. Luckily for the defending champions, Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited SRH to bowl at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Unsurprisingly, MI went all guns blazing to give themselves a chance. Ishan Kishan was nothing but sensational at the top as SRH bowlers looked utterly clueless against him. He scored 84 off 32 balls, giving MI a stupendous start. Suryakumar Yadav took over the baton and continued the onslaught. He scored 82 off 40 balls as MI posted 235/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing the gigantic total, SRH got off to a flying start with Abhishek Sharma and Jason Roy attacking bowlers from the outset. The likes of Manish Pandey and Priyam Garg also played handy contributions. However, the task proved to be too much as SRH was restricted at 193/8, losing the game by 42 runs.
