The Qualifier 1 between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals on Sunday turned out to be a humdinger. In the league stage, DC defeated CSK both times. But in the crunch game, MS Dhoni and Co. showed great resurgence and won by four wickets with two balls left. Even as CSK have qualified for the final, the Capitals will now play in the Qualifier 2 to take place at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Shaw and Pant score half-centuries

After Being sent in to bat first, the Capitals got off to a blistering start. In the powerplay, Prithvi Shaw threw his bat around to help DC garner 51 runs. In between, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer couldn’t go into double digits. Both batters perished to Josh Hazlewood. Axar Patel was promoted to No.4, but the move didn’t work out. Moeen Ali got rid of the southpaw, who made 10 off 11 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja delivered the body blow after he nipped out Shaw, who raced away to a 34-ball 60 with the help of seven fours and three sixes. From there on, Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer stitched together a partnership of 83 runs, helping CSK to 172 for five. Even as Pant stayed unbeaten on a 35-ball 51, the left-handed Hetmyer stayed unbeaten on 37 off 24 with four boundaries.

MS Dhoni finishes in style

CSK didn’t have the best of starts as Anrich Nortje rattled Faf du Plessis’ woodwork. But Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa brought the Super Kings back into the game with a 110-run stand for the second wicket. The right-hander Uthappa scored his maiden fifty for CSK and went on to score 63 off 44 with seven fours and two sixes. CSK’s experiment to send Shardul Thakur didn’t work.

Ambati Rayudu perished for one after a string throw from Shreyas Iyer saw him short at the striker’s end. At the other end, Gaikwad kept his cool and notched a fifty off 37 balls. The youngster scored 70 off 50 with five fours and two sixes. In the last over, CSK needed 13 runs and MS Dhoni kept his calm and composure and smashed Tom Curran for three fours to take his team home over the line.
