The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) side sprung a surprise by removing David Warner as the captain and giving the mantle of captaincy to Kane Williamson in the middle of the 14th edition of the IPL.  And, Warner’s place in the side might also no longer be a certainty.

And, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has opined that the only possible reason why Warner was removed from the role of captaincy is because the SRH side wants someone like Jason Holder or Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman in their side.

Manjrekar also stated that the call that the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) side makes will be an interesting one. He further said that if David Warner does not figure in the playing XI for the next two games, then the reason for removing him from captaincy will be known.

“The only reason I see for him to be removed from the captaincy is they want someone like Jason Holder to come in or have another game-changing spinner like Rashid Khan in the shape of Mujeeb. But that again will be an interesting call. But if he doesn’t feature in the playing eleven in the next game or the game after that, you’ll know exactly why he has been left out,” said Manjrekar in a chat with Cricinfo.

“I have been a huge admirer of David Warner,” says Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar further said that he has admired David Warner, and even termed Warner as a symbol of consistency. The cricketer-turned-commentator also added that Warner has not looked out of form for him to be dropped.

Adding that the Sunrisers Hyderabad side should have won three matches easily when they were chasing, Manjrekar stated that the ‘Orange Army’ should have batted well.

“I’ve been a huge admirer of David Warner. He’s one batsman that I look at as a symbol of the consistency of an overseas player. I mean, IPL after IPL this guy has delivered for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

And [this year as well] it hasn’t been the case where he hasn’t got a run or looked out of form where you need to drop him… Warner doesn’t deserve to be dropped. Captaincy as well, there were 3 run chases that they should have won easily, where does captaincy feature in that? There was also a Super Over. Had they batted better, they would have 4 wins there,” said Manjrekar.

Manjrekar concluded by stating that the pressure gets to the team management when the side is at the bottom of the points table.

“But this is what happens when you are right at the bottom of the table, you have to understand the pressures that come from the owners who want the management to do something to change this,” concluded Manjrekar.
