IPL 2022: 5 players who can replace Jason Roy in Gujarat Titans

Dynamic English opener Jason Roy has withdrawn from IPL 2022 citing bio-bubble fatigue. Roy informed about his decision to the Gujarat Lions earlier. The new franchise had bought the South Africa-born cricketer for INR 2 crore which was also his base price at the IPL 2022 mega auction. It is indeed a huge blow for the Titans as the 2019 World Cup winner was in the form of his life having amassed 303 runs in six matches at the recently-concluded PSL 2022 averaging 50.50 that included two half-centuries representing the Quetta Gladiators. While Gujarat are yet to name a replacement, they do have some great options available. So, without further ado, here’s a look at five of them. Five Replacement Options for Jason Roy in IPL 2022 1. Aaron Finch Aaron Finch. No team was willing to buy him even at his base price of INR 1.5 crore. However, he now has a chance to open the innings for Gujarat Titans alongside youngster Shubman Gill. Finch is currently the fifth-highest scorer in T20Is, having amassed 2,686 runs from 88 matches, and also has a wealth of experience under his belt playing for eight franchises in the marquee tournament between 2010 to 2020. Therefore, the Australian white-ball captain could be a great option to replace Jason Roy for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. 2. Martin Guptill Martin Guptill. Nonetheless, with Jason Roy out of action, it could be an opportunity for the senior New Zealand batter to make his way into the Titans setup. Guptill had scored 152 runs during the India T20I series in November that included two half-centuries and was also the leading run-scorer in the shortest format with 3,299 runs to his name before being surpassed by the current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. With a great reputation in international T20s, it will not be astonishing should the 35-year-old be seen donning the Gujarat jersey this time around. 3. Dawid Malan Dawid Malan. Shakib had an unimpressive ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and a hamstring injury had also forced him to miss the succeeding Pakistan T20Is. He is currently the second-ranked T20I all-rounder in the ICC Rankings just behind Afghanistan sensation Mohammad Nabi. Apart from being a handy middle-order batter, Shakib can also provide vital breakthroughs with his left-arm spin which could turn out to be a bonus for GT. Therefore, the southpaw could be the ideal replacement for Jason Roy. Meanwhile, it also remains to be seen if he is available for the IPL given that he has committed to BCB about traveling to South Africa for the Test series. 5. Suresh Raina Suresh Raina. Known as ‘Mr.IPL’, Raina has not done anything exceptional in the last two seasons, He missed the 2020 edition citing personal reasons and only managed 160 runs in 12 matches at a paltry average of 17.77 in 2021. Nonetheless, the seasoned cricketer still remains the fourth-highest run-getter in IPL history with 5528 runs from 205 matches averaging 32.51 and a strike rate of 136.76, including a century and 39 half-centuries. Raina, who had captained the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in the 2016 and 2017 editions could well be seen in action for Gujarat in different colors and setup this time.
