In the first match of the double-header on Sunday, Delhi Capitals (DC) will be facing Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, which will be the second match of IPL 2022. In IPL 2021, Mumbai Indians had an unsatisfactory season by their standards and they finished fifth. Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, topped the group, but lost both their knockout matches.
A major problem with Delhi Capitals at the beginning of the season is that they only have two overseas options in Tim Seifert and Rovman Powell. They will be missing the services of IPL’s leading overseas batter David Warner, in-form Mitchell Marsh, express pacer Anrich Nortje, master of cutters Mustafizur Rahman, and also Lungi Ngidi.
With a full-strength team, they will actually have a world-class top-four with David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, and Rishabh Pant. While Seifert will be replaced by Warner, Mandeep Singh would likely be replaced by Mitchell Marsh who would love to make a statement. The middle-order is not as powerful, and it is going to be a test for Sarfaraz Khan, Rovman Powell, and Shardul Thakur to show their finishing skills.
Rovman Powell, who was exceptional in the recent T20I series in India, would want to continue with that form so that he is not replaced when all overseas players are available. Apart from Axar Patel, the bowling of Delhi Capitals doesn’t look strong on paper.
Unlike the Capitals, the Mumbai Indians have no problems with their overseas player availability, with only Jofra Archer not being available. Though they let go Quinton de Kock, Mumbai still have a decent top-three with their retained players – Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav. However, they will miss in-form Suryakumar Yadav who was injured during the West Indies series this year.
This might be the right time for the Hyderabad youngster Tilak Varma to replace him and prove his worth. The middle-order for Mumbai Indians has a lot of explosive batters in Kieron Pollard, Tim David, and Daniel Sams. This is where their overseas quota is centered upon. Mumbai, too, have some concerns when it comes to their bowling with Jasprit Bumrah being the only big name. Their lack of big-name spin options might hurt them on Indian pitches.
Let’s take a look at some of the important stats and numbers ahead of the 2nd match between DC and MI in the Indian Premier League 2022:
