IPL 2022, Match 23 MI vs PBKS, Stats Review: Rohit Sharma's landmark, Shikhar Dhawan feat, and other stats

Skipper Mayank Agarwal and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan both slammed fifties as Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) by 12 runs in Match 23 of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The Kings inflicted more misery on the MI side as Rohit Sharma’s men have now lost their opening five matches on the bounce. Odean Smith and Kagiso Rabada took four and two wickets respectively as PBKS won their third match this season.

Talking about how the match went by, MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. They made just one change with Ramandeep Singh making way for pacer Tymal Mills. PBKS went into the match with an unchanged side from their last encounter. Mayank notched up 52 runs off 32 deliveries while Dhawan played a solid innings of 70 runs off 50 balls. A whirlwind innings from wicketkeeper batter Jitesh Sharma, who scored an unbeaten 30 runs off just 15 deliveries, powered PBKS to a huge total of 198/5.

Chasing 199 to win, Rohit looked like getting back to his best but was dismissed for 28 runs off 17 balls which included three fours and two maximums. Ishan Kishan made just three runs as Vaibhav Arora accounted for his wicket. Newbies Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma then smashed the opposition bowlers all around the park as the former scored 49 runs off 25 balls with four fours and five towering sixes.

Varma also played a handy knock of 36 runs off 20 deliveries. Both Varma and Kieron Pollard were run-out with Suryakumar Yadav being involved in both the suicidal dismissals. Suryakumar fought hard but he got dismissed for 43 runs and MI suffered their fifth consecutive loss of the season. For his captain’s knock, Mayank Agarwal was adjudged the Player of the Match.

2 – Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal registered the second-highest opening partnership (97) this season. KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock added 99 runs against Chennai Super Kings. It is also PBKS’s best opening stand in this IPL.

1 – Dhawan has now scored the most runs (871) against MI in the tournament. He went past Suresh Raina’s tally of 824 runs.

10003 – Rohit Sharma reached the milestone of 10000 runs in T20 matches. He became the second Indian and seventh overall player to achieve the feat.

1 – MI became the first team to lose the opening five matches of an IPL season twice. They lost the first five games in the 2014 season as well.

2 – Dhawan equaled Virat Kohli and both are now joint-second for scoring the most 50-plus scores (47) in the IPL. David Warner tops the chart with 55 such scores.

2 – Dhawan is now joint-second with four other batters for scoring the most 50-plus scores (6) against MI in the league.

4 – Dhawan is now also the batter with the fourth-most 50-plus scores (26) in the first innings in the IPL.
