The 24th match of IPL 2022 witnessed a clash between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Both Rajasthan and Gujarat had three wins in four matches, but the former were on top of the table, courtesy of a higher net run rate. Gujarat defeated Rajasthan to hand them their second defeat of the season and take over their spot at the top of the points table.

Winning the toss, RR skipper Sanju Samson elected to chase. Though Trent Boult was out with injury, they managed to pick up a couple of wickets in the powerplay and restricted GT to 42/2. But soon after the powerplay, it was Shubman Gill, who had to depart after Matthew Wade and Vijay Shankar. The top-three batters shared 27 runs among themselves, as GT struggled at 54/3 at the end of seven overs.

But after skipper Hardik Pandya’s entry, the tables turned around. Pandya helped GT to take the scoreboard to 192/4 as he played a sensational knock of 87*(52). GT posted their highest total of the season, even after having a tricky start. Pandya and Abhinav Manohar shared an 86-run stand, followed by David Miller sharing a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket alongside the skipper as the three managed to take their side to a par total.

Talking about the chase, RR opener Jos Buttler started off brilliantly as he brought up his half-century in the powerplay, scoring a quickfire 54(24). After Devdutt Padikkal’s dismissal, RR sent Ravi Ashwin in the top order. But the plan did not work for them as he had to walk out early. Buttler had the game wrapped in his hand, but it was the day of GT bowlers who cleaned the RR top-order in the powerplay. With Buttler’s wicket, RR lost their way at 65/3 after six overs.

The pressure built up on the middle-order batters, and they could not handle it well as GT bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals. They restricted RR from chasing the score and returned to winning form after a loss in their previous encounter. GT made a remarkable comeback and won the game by 37 runs to jump to the top of the points table with eight points to their name.
