The Mumbai Indians held their nerves to register a thrilling five-run win over the table-toppers Gujarat Titans in Match 51 of IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on May 6. Despite losing a close contest, the Titans continue to occupy the top spot in the IPL 2022 points table with eight wins from 11 games and 16 points to their tally. While GT suffered a second straight defeat, it was a back-to-back victory for Mumbai.

The coin landed in the favour of Gujarat skipper Hardik Pandya who decided to bowl first. However, the Gujarat bowlers struggled early on as captain Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan roared back to form and added 74 runs for the opening stand. While Rohit scored 43 runs from 28 deliveries, Ishan made a 29-ball 45. Once this partnership was broken, MI lost quick wickets and found themselves at 119/4 in the 15th over.

Middle-order sensation Tim David once again played an important cameo and added finishing touches to Mumbai’s innings thereby propelling them to 177/6 from their 20 overs. Tim remained unbeaten on 44 runs off 21 balls.

Daniel Sams bowls a match-winning final over for MI

In reply, Gujarat Titans meant business right from the word ‘go’ as the opening pair of Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha added 106 for the first wicket. Gill made 52 runs from 36 deliveries while Saha shined with a 40-ball 55 and even when the duo was dismissed in quick succession, the target did not look intimidating at all for GT.

Despite the run chase being a manageable one from thereon, all the Gujarat batters needlessly threw away their wickets. While a well-set Sai Sudharsan hit the stumps with his bat to walk away, skipper Hardik, and Rahul Tewatia’s run-outs opened the floodgates for the Mumbai Indians.

The final over was given to Daniel Sams and Gujarat needed just nine runs. He conceded just one run from the first two balls before Tewatia lost his wicket while attempting a hasty second run. Nonetheless, the five-time champions could not afford to relax as the hard-hitting Rashid Khan came out to the middle.

Sams kept his nerves and Rashid could only sneak a single from the fourth ball which happened to be a mistimed shot that almost landed in Sam’s hands who was running back to take the catch. Even though the strike was with David Miller, he missed the next two deliveries as the Mumbai Indians started celebrating.
