The top two teams of the IPL 2022– Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants squared off in the 57th match. The former had lost their previous two games and were struggling to regain their form, whereas the latter was backed with a victory from their last game. It did not take long for GT to gain their mojo as they thrashed LSG to win the game by 62 runs.

After electing to bat first, the GT batters faced some tough challenges. Early on, Mohsin Khan led the way by dismissing Wriddhiman Saha (5 off 11), and Matthew Wade (10 off 7) walked off shortly after him, putting Gujarat on the back foot. Shubman Gill was tasked with keeping the scoreboard going when Hardik Pandya (11 off 13) was unable to play the captain’s knock.

Gill (63* off 49) solidified a gradual rebuild with David Miller (26 off 24) to put up a 52-run stand for the fourth wicket. The surface turned up in a way that made it difficult for the batters to hit and get off to a fast start. As a result, they were not able to score much as things kept piling up towards the end and the pressure on the batters kept increasing. The prolific finisher Rahul Tewatia (22* off 16) too could not do much as GT ended at 144/4 in their 20 overs.

GT bowlers shine as they dismiss the LSG lineup for 82 runs

Coming to the chase, LSG batters faced a similar situation as the GT batters. The opening duo of Quinton de Kock (11 off 10) and KL Rahul (8 off 16) struggled in the initial stages, and eventually lost their wickets early in the game, courtesy to Yash Dayal and Mohammad Shami. Soon followed the dismissal of Karan Sharma, the LSG debutant who walked back scoring just four runs in as many balls as LSG lost three wickets in the powerplay.

GT bowlers left no page unturned as they kept picking wickets at regular intervals, leaving no opportunity for the LSG batters to score. Deepak Hooda (27 off 26) stood for a long period, but neither did he score many runs, nor could he form a partnership with the batters at the other end. GT bounced back stronger from their defeats in the previous games and became the first team to qualify for the playoffs courtesy of Gill’s half-century and Rashid Khan’s four-wicket haul.
