Andre Russell smashed an unbeaten 49 runs off 28 deliveries and took 3/22 with the ball as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 54 runs in Match 61 of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The Caribbean power-hitter powered his side to a total of 177/6. The Orange Army struggled throughout their run-chase, and the loss means Kane Williamson’s team has now lost five matches on the bounce.

Speaking about how the match unfolded, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and KKR opted to bat first. Venkatesh Iyer’s bad season stretched as he got dismissed for just seven runs. Ajinkya Rahane and Nitish Rana made 28 and 26 runs respectively while captain Shreyas Iyer got out for 15 runs. Billings played a good hand of 34 runs off 29 deliveries but it was Russell who muscled his way to 49. Speedster Umran Malik was the pick of the bowlers for SRH for his fiery spell of 3/33 in four overs.

Chasing 178 to win, Skipper Williamson’s disastrous season continued as he played yet another slow innings of nine runs off 17 balls. His opening partner Abhishek Sharma looked in good touch during his quickfire innings of 43 runs off 28 deliveries, which included four fours and two sixes.

Rahul Tripathi made only nine runs as Tim Southee got him out with a terrific reflex catch. Nicholas Pooran also hit one straight back to the hands of Sunil Narine as he amassed just two runs. Aiden Markram slammed 32 runs with three maximums but SRH never really looked to get going in the run-chase as they could managed only 123/8 in 20 overs.

With this victory, KKR find themselves in the sixth position with 12 points and are still alive in the competition, while SRH have slipped to the eighth spot with ten points. For his all-round performance, Andre Russell won the Player of the Match award.
