Luck favored Lucknow Super Giants as they reserved a berth in the playoffs by defeating the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 66th match of the IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. In what can be named as probably one of the finest games this season, it was a crucial win for the two-time champions KKR, but LSG put curtains on all their hopes, thereby winning the nail-biting thriller by two runs on the last ball.

LSG’s innings with the bat was sensational. The openers did a spectacular job for the team with no other batter getting the opportunity to bat. Quinton de Kock led his way from the front as KL Rahul supported him like never before. The start was slow, as the duo put up 44 runs in the powerplay and held the game tight.

They jumped to 83/0 by the end of the 10th over as both of them punished the KKR bowlers. The game went on and on, and KKR bowlers were striving to scalp a wicket, but it was just not their day. De Kock (140* off 70) notched up a brilliant century, and Rahul (68* off 51) knocked a half-century as the two remained unbeaten throughout the innings, taking the team’s total and their partnership to 210 runs. De Kock hit a total of 20 boundaries, which were equally split between fours and sixes, and KL Rahul accounted for seven in total.

LSG survive KKR’s wrath to win the game by the barest of margins

Coming to the chase, it was a big task for KKR as LSG had set a mark. KKR did not have an ideal start as they lost openers Venkatesh Iyer (four-ball duck) and Abhijeet Tomar (4 off 8) in the powerplay, but what followed later was a nightmare for LSG. Shreyas Iyer (50 off 29)and Nitish Rana (42 off 22) carried the game strongly and put up a 56-run stand for the third wicket before the latter was sent back walking by Krishnappa Gowtham.

Sam Billings (36 off 24) was good in the middle order too, but could not stand against Ravi Bishnoi’s brilliance. A brilliant partnership between Rinku Singh and Sunil Narine (21* off 7) kept KKR in the game till the last breath as the duo put up a whopping 58-run stand for the seventh wicket, with the former taking charge of the hitting. Rinku Singh was just one big hit away from clinching the deal for KKR in the final over before Marcus Stoinis ended his dream run.

21 runs were required off the final over when Rinku Singh (40 off 15) brought it down to three runs from the last two balls. Stoinis’ efforts paid off in the final two deliveries as he took two back-to-back wickets to survive the KKR scare and win the game by just two runs.
