Umesh Yadav and Andre Russell were too hot to handle for Punjab Kings (PBKS) as the former with his exceptional fast bowling and Russell with brutal power-hitting completely destroyed Mayank Agarwal’s side in Match 8 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Umesh recorded his best figures of 4/23 in the league while Russell muscled eight gigantic sixes on his way to an unbeaten 70 runs off just 31 balls to win the match for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets.

Speaking about how the clash unfolded, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to field first. Both sides made one change as KKR replaced Sheldon Jackson with Shivam Mavi while Sandeep Sharma made way for Kagiso Rabada in PBKS line-up. Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan amassed just one and 16 runs respectively with Bhanuka Rajapaksa again playing a blitz knock of 31 runs off just nine deliveries with three fours and as many sixes. Liam Livingstone made just 19 runs while young Raj Bawa notched up 11 runs. Shahrukh Khan bagged a duck as PBKS were bundled out for 137 runs.

KKR openers Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer mustered just 12 and three runs respectively. Skipper Shreyas played a quickfire innings of 26 runs off 15 balls which included five fours. Nitish Rana’s poor run in this IPL continued as he got out for a duck. It was all Andre Russell then as the Caribbean dasher played a blitzkrieg and whirlwind innings with a strike rate of 225.81.

Sam Billings also remained not out at 24 as the duo scripted the second victory for their side in the tournament. For his brilliant spell of 4/23 in four overs, Umesh Yadav was adjudged the Player of the Match.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from Match 8 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League 2022:

 1 – Umesh Yadav registered his best bowling figures (4/23) in his 123rd IPL inning. His previous best was 4/24 against Rajasthan Royals in 2013.

204 – Shreyas Iyer (204) completed 200 fours in the IPL.

50 – Umesh also completed 50 wickets in the powerplay in the IPL.

4006 – Ajinkya Rahane reached the milestone of 4000 runs in the tournament.

250 – Tim Southee achieved the landmark of 250 wickets in the T20 matches.

3 – Andre Russell recorded his third-highest score (70*) in the IPL.

1 – With 33 wickets against PBKS, Umesh also became the bowler with the most wickets against an opponent in the league. His teammate Sunil Narine has 32 scalps against PBKS.

154 – Russell completed 150 sixes in the league.

3 – With 10 50-plus IPL scores, Russell equaled Chris Lynn (10) and Shubman Gill (10) and is now joint-third with them for as many scores for KKR. Gautam Gambhir (27) and Robin Uthappa (16) are in the top two.

9 – Umesh took three or more wickets for the ninth time against PBKS.  No other player has more than five such instances against an opponent in the IPL.

6 – Six out of the ten POTM awards Umesh has won in the IPL have been against PBKS.

3 – For the third consecutive match in this IPL, Umesh has taken a wicket in the first over.

1 – With six POTM awards against PBKS, Umesh became the player with the most awards against an opponent. While Yusuf Pathan won five against Deccan Chargers, Rohit Sharma and Chris Gayle have received the honour five times against KKR.
