The five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) managed to register their third victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after defeating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a group stage encounter played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 12 (Thursday).

MI skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to have a bowl first. His decision proved to be right as CSK lost Devon Conway, Moeen Ali, Robin Uthappa, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ambati Rayudu inside the powerplay as the defending champions got into all sorts of trouble.

However, their misery did not end as left-handed batter Shivam Dube was also sent back to the pavilion soon. It was then skipper MS Dhoni and veteran player Dwayne Bravo who tried to steady CSK’s ship. However, that was not to be as Bravo was scalped by Kumar Kartikeya.

After the fall of Bravo, CSK wickets continued to tumble as skipper Dhoni was left stranded at one end. The Yellow Army managed to score just 97 and was bowled out in 16 overs. For MI, Daniel Sams (three wickets), Jasprit Bumrah (one wicket), Riley Meredith (two wickets), Kartikeya (two wickets), and Ramandeep Singh (one wicket) were the successful bowlers.

CSK fought excellently in the second innings

Coming to chase just 98 runs, MI batters tried to make the task difficult for themselves with wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, Daniel Sams, and Tristan Stubbs getting out cheaply. However, it was young batter Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen who stabilized MI’s innings and ensured that the Men in Blue and Gold got two more points.

For CSK, Mukesh Choudhary (three wickets), Simranjeet Singh (one wicket), and Moeen Ali (one wicket) were the wicket-takers. Even after winning tonight’s encounter, MI continue to languish at the bottom of the points table. Meanwhile, CSK are placed just one spot ahead of the five-time champions.
