The Indian Premier League (IPL) has revolutionised the shortest format ever since its inception in 2008. With the advent of the platform, numerous teams and players have produced scintillating cricket which has kept the fans by the edge of their seats, witnessing the high-voltage action.
Following the conclusion of the season, players are awarded for their performances in various categories and one among them is the IPL’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Started in the inaugural edition in 2008, the award was first known as the ‘Man of the Tournament’ title. However, it was only in 2013 that it was renamed to MVP.
The MVP award is given to the player who accumulates the most fantasy points towards the end of a particular season. The unique scoring system awards players with points for each boundary, six, wicket, dot ball, catch, run-out, and stumping. Notably, a player receives 2.5 points for every four, 3.5 points for six, 3.5 points for a wicket, 1 point for a dot ball, and 2.5 points for every catch and stumping.
Following the conclusion of the group phase of the 16th edition, Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal tops the charts with 320.5 fantasy points in 14 appearances followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Faf du Plessis, who has 283.5 in as many outings. However, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Cameron Green, and Suryakumar Yadav are among the players still in contention for the MVP award as their teams are still part of the IPL playoffs.
However, it was Gujarat Titans' Shubman Gill who performed exceptionally towards the business end to end with 343.5 points and bag the title for the 2023 edition with an unbelievable turnaround. Additionally, for his dream run throughout the season, he also bagged the IPL Orange Cap with 890 runs in 17 innings, making him the batter to score second-most runs in a single season after Virat Kohli (973 runs in 2016 edition).
Impressively, Sunil Narine (2012, 2018), Andre Russell (2015, 2019) and Shane Watson (2008, 2013) have won the accolade for the joint-most number of times in the history of the top-tier league. Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Harshal Patel are the only three Indian players to have won the award in the previous editions. Rajasthan’s Jos Buttler won the award for collecting the most points in the 2022 edition.
