IPL to allow the inter-team loans of capped players in the upcoming season

One of the things that the Indian Premier League has constantly managed to do is push the envelope as far as the innovations are concerned. From introducing the concept of Time-Out to using a Play-off format while deciding the finalists to introducing a football like a mid-season trading window, the IPL has always managed to keep the fans hooked.

The 2020 season of the Indian Premier League is likely to be scheduled in late March with the Board of Control for Cricket in India earmarking the period between March 28 and May 24 as the prospective window for the marquee annual event. And, if the latest developments are to be believed, the 2020 edition of the tournament will allow franchisees to loan capped cricketers- Indian or overseas- to other teams at the halfway point of the season.

According to the rules laid by the IPL Governing council, the player should have played a maximum of two games at the halfway stage, for him to be considered for the loan transfer. The arrangement will be between the franchises and the money will be waiting from outside of the auction purse.

Only uncapped players were allowed to be traded in last season of IPL

Last year, the IPL had introduced a similar concept but it was only restricted to uncapped players, and the condition for loaning was that the player in question should not have played more than two matches at the halfway point. A five-day transfer window was opened where franchises had the opportunity to trade-in uncapped players of other teams. Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma and Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene were quite vocal in support of the move but no teams showed any interest.

“The mid-season transfer window will give the teams an opportunity to see what they need in the squad and other teams will also be looking at what players they can get. It completely depends on the franchise if a situation comes when we need to get a player or give a player. It is good for the tournament and will add even more value to it,” Rohit had said in a press conference back then as quoted by The Times of India.

With the IPL allowing for capped players to be loaned or transferred, the franchises may well be interested this time around, as compared to last season.
