IPL8 – Malinga and McClenaghan earn Mumbai their second win: Mumbai Indians registered their second win of the season as they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 20 runs at the Wankhade Stadium, Mumbai. With this win, Mumbai stays in eighth spot with 4 points, the same number of points as Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Chasing a par total of 158 to win on a good batting wicket at the Wankhade stadium, Sunrisers began strongly as their openers Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner put on 45 run partnership in the first five overs before David Warner was dismissed caught by Ambati Rayudu at the third man region off Lasith Malinga bouncer for just 9. Dhawan played some stunning shots in his innings of 42 off just 29 balls. New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan had him caught by Malinga at mid-wicket and that changed the complexion of the match.
Spinner J Suchith and Vinay Kumar applied the brakes in the middle overs and accounted for wickets at regular intervals. KL Rahul and Ravi Bopara kept the scorecard ticking and when 60 was required in the last six overs, McClenaghan came back and had KL Rahul caught by Rayudu and in his next over, he dismissed Ravi Bopara caught by Hardik Pandya for 23 and that sealed the match in favour of Mumbai.
In the next over, Malinga took the wickets of Hanuma Vihari, Karn Sharma and Dale Steyn in a three wicket maiden before Vinay Kumar finished off the formalities. Sunrisers managed only 137 -8 in their 20 overs courtesy some splendid bowling from Mumbai Indians. Malinga finished with 4-23 while McClenaghan registered figures of 3-20 in his four overs.
Choosing to bat, Mumbai Indians managed only 157-8 in 20 overs courtesy Lendl Simmons’ 51, Rohit Sharma’s 24 and Kieron Pollard’s 33. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of Sunrisers bowlers with figures of 3-26 in four overs.
Naman Ojha was awarded the Hotstar moment of the day for his catch to dismiss Vinay Kumar and Lasith Malinga was named Man of the Match.
