Afghanistan suffered a massive defeat at the hands of Ireland during the 2-match ODI series ahead of the ODI World Cup in England. Paul Stirling’s 71 and skipper William Porterfield’s 53 helped the Irish team finish with a respectable total of 210. Some tight bowling limited the Afghan top-order to 40/4 by the 20th over. The likes of Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan tried to score quickly but lack of support saw them getting bundled out for only 138.

All the major stats and numbers from the first of the two ODI games between Ireland and Afghanistan:

Ireland gets better of Afghans:

210 – The total of 210 is the joint 5th lowest that Ireland has successfully defended in the ODI format. The lowest is 148 runs against Kenya during the 2008 Belfast ODI. This is also the 2nd lowest defended total for Ireland against Afghanistan behind the 163 way back in 2012 in Dublin ODI.

An economical start by McBrine:

4 – Number of maiden overs bowled by Andy McBrine in his ten overs; the joint-most in an ODI by any player for Ireland. Trent Johnson also bowled four maiden overs when he took 5/14 against Canada in 2009.

McBrine’s four maidens are also the joint-most by any spinner while opening the bowling in an ODI. Three other spinners also bowled four maidens while sharing the new ball in an ODI inning.

17 – The 17 runs conceded by Andy McBrine in his ten overs are the 2nd fewest by any bowler in an ODI for Ireland. (Min: 10 overs bowled) Trent Johnston gave away only 14 runs during his 5-fer in the 2009 Centurion ODI against Canada.

These 17 runs are also the 5th fewest conceded by a spinner opening the bowling in an ODI. The fewest are 14 runs by Mujeeb Ur Rahman also during an AFG-IRE ODI earlier this year.

Stirling @ 1000:

1062 – Paul Stirling became the first player to aggregate 1000 runs in Afghanistan-Ireland ODI matches. In the 25 innings against the Afghans, Stirling scored 1032 runs with a century and nine fifties. Ed Joyce’s 615 runs are the 2nd most by any player in the AFG-IRE ODIs.

1 – Stirling became the first Ireland player to score 1000+ ODI runs against a team. He is also the first player to amass 1000 ODI runs against the Afghans. No other player even scored 650 ODI runs against Afghanistan and also against any team for Ireland.

Nabi @ 150:

151 – Mohammad Nabi became the first player to hit 150 sixes for Afghanistan in International cricket with the first of his two sixes in this game. Mohammad Shahzad (128) and Asghar Afghan (108) are the only players to hit 100+ International sixes for Afghanistan.
