The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) kicked off their home return to the Chepauk Stadium with a spectacular win against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a perfect nail-biting encounter. CSK thrashed the visitors by five wickets to secure their second win of the tournament.

The openers helped the home team gain some much-needed momentum in the heavy run chase, after which the overseas recruit Sam Billings played an explosive match-winning knock of 56 runs off just 23 balls, to guide his team towards the huge victory. All the spectators who came in large numbers to watch and support their home team who were returning to the IPL saga after a span of two years, witnessed a treating run-blazing affair won by the home side.

The crowd deserved each and every happening of this game: Dhoni

The CSK skipper MS Dhoni who was very much excited for his franchise’s return in their home paradise mentioned that it is good to start off the home campaign with a victory. He stated that the Chennai crowd deserved to watch every crucial event of this match. The skipper also noted that the emotions were surely rising in the end moments of the game, but the positive energy helped them to have the belief in their players to take them past the finishing line successfully.

“It feels good, to come back after two years and win. The crowd deserved the first innings, the second innings. Everybody has their own emotion levels, but in the dugout, we like to keep faith in our batsmen or bowler at a particular time. Positive energy helps. My pulse rises too — and that’s why we have a dressing room. I express myself in the dressing room but not in the dugout,” said Dhoni during the post-match presentation.

Earlier in the first innings, the home side reduced KKR to 89-5 inside 10 overs, after which Windies hard-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell played a remarkable and powerful inning to help his side post a fighting total of 202 runs. Dhoni praised young Billings for his match-winning contribution and also admitted that they actually conceded a lot runs. During the game, 31 massive sixes were hit in the crowd, which also is the biggest tally in terms of most sixes scored in an IPL match.

“If you’re too expressive in the field, then commentators get a lot of things to talk about. It’s good to see Sam bat the way he batted. Yes, we did go for runs, and Kolkata did bat well. Bowlers from both sides had a rough time, but I’m sure the crowd enjoyed,” added the CSK skipper.
