He made his debut under his captaincy in 2000 and went on to become one of the main pillars of Indian batting for a long time. The credit for the rise of ace batsman Yuvraj Singh in Indian cricket often goes to his first captain Sourav Ganguly and the two, who have immense respect for each other, are due to meet in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 on Sunday. For the fans, this is a moment to relish.

Yuvraj is playing for the Mumbai Indians (MI), his sixth overall franchise in the IPL, this season while ‘Maharaj’, as Ganguly is nicknamed, is the advisor to the Delhi Capitals (DC) and the two teams will play each other in their first game this season at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Mumbai versus Delhi games have always been absorbing as the two share a 11-11 head-to-head record although the MI have won the title thrice while DC are yet to make their maiden final.

Sunday’s clash will be a high-voltage one as both sides have some big names in their respective ranks. While Delhi have the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer and others, Mumbai have Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuvraj, and others. Even the two teams’ managements are star-studded and there will be no shortage of inputs for the players on either side.

Play like Yuvraj Singh

However, Ganguly was seen encouraging Yuvraj during the two teams’ training session on the eve of Sunday’s match. The duo looked comfortable in each other’s presence and brought alive nostalgic moments for the fans. Ganguly was seen wishing one of his favourite cricketers good luck and telling him while parting: “Have a good season, play like Yuvraj Singh.”

Yuvraj, 37, almost missed the bus in this year’s IPL and was picked by the MI at the last minute along with Sri Lankan veteran Lasith Malinga. The southpaw played for Kings XI Punjab last season but had a horrible run with the bat, scoring just 65 runs in eight matches. He was released ahead of this season. The man is still eyeing a berth in India’s squad for this year’s World Cup by having a successful IPL this year.
