Ravindra Jadeja decided to relinquish the Chennai Super Kings captaincy last week owing to the defending champions’ underwhelming performances in the ongoing IPL 2022 that saw them manage just two wins from eight matches prior to MS Dhoni’s reappointment as skipper.

While the move of stepping down from the position evoked mixed reactions from the experts, Jadeja’s former CSK teammate and Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has come forward in support of the Jamnagar cricketer by saying that he made the right decision as it is not easy to lead a franchise that has a very big legacy which comes with an added pressure.

Shane Watson speaks on Ravindra Jadeja stepping down as the CSK skipper

“When I heard initially that Jadeja was going to take over, I was blown away because everyone knows that when MS is on the field, just the control and respect and the aura he has around him as a leader, it was going to be difficult for Jadeja no matter what. I was surprised, if MS did not play in a game, got injured or they rested him for a game, then absolutely I thought it was a great chance for Jadeja to take over and do a couple of games here and there. To sort of be captain, take over when MS is going to be on the field, was always going to be very difficult for Jadeja,” Watson said on The Grade Cricketer Podcast.

While Ravindra Jadeja’s captaincy did not click this season, he also failed to impress both with the bat and ball as he managed just 112 runs in eight games and registered five scalps to his name.
After MS Dhoni was handed over the captaincy reins, the title-holders did register an impressive 13-run win over southern rivals Sunrisers Hyderabad but, then went down to the Royal Challengers Bangalore by the same margin.  With their playoff hopes fast diminishing CSK have no other choice but to win their remaining fixtures.
The Chennai Super Kings will next be seen in action against the Delhi Capitals at the DY Patil Stadium on May 8.
