For every international cricketer, it’s a dream to feature in the World Cup and represent their national team. The former Pakistan Test skipper Azhar Ali, who is still a regular feature in the Test side, also hopes to be part of limited-overs team in the next year’s World Cup 2019 in England. Azhar has featured in 53 ODIs and the opener has scored 1845 runs at an average of 36.9, which also includes 12 fifties and three hundreds.

Ali last played an ODI for Pakistan during the series against New Zealand in January 2018, after which he was dropped due to consistently poor outings. However, the 33-year-old had played an important role in his team’s victorious campaign in the Champions Trophy 2017. He smacked three half centuries in the tournament and ended up as the second highest run-getter for the team.

Azhar sets his eyes on featuring in the Pakistan side in World Cup 2019

Azhar revealed that his current aim is to surely find a place back in the limited-overs side, especially looking ahead at the upcoming World Cup. He reckons that it will be a hard task to find a place in the current line-up given the way most batsmen have been playing. He also mentioned that it will be a great honour for him to represent the national team in the mega event next year in England.

“That is absolutely my target to find a place in the Pakistan squad for the 2019 World Cup. I understand that I need to work hard to get into the team but that remains my aim and it will be an honour to represent Pakistan at such a big stage if given the opportunity,” said Azhar while talking to Daily Times.

The Pakistan team management is still trying to figure out the best opening partner to support Fakhar Zaman at the top. Though Imam-ul-Haq has done well in the recent past it could be an opportunity for someone like Azhar to regain his spot in the ODI team.
