When the ‘Sandpaper Gate’ saga unfolded, Cricket Australia (CA) banned the then captain Steve Smith from any leadership role for 2 years and banned the then vice-captain David Warner from taking up a leadership role for his entire career.

And, ahead of the 2021 Ashes series against England, Smith has been elevated to the role of vice-captain of the Australian side. And, former cricket legend Shane Warne has offered his thoughts in this regard.

Warne questioned how the captain of Australia when the Sandpaper Gate scandal broke out, Steve Smith can be offered a leadership position, whereas David Warner can be denied. The leg-spin bowling wizard added that Warner has arguably the best brain in the Australian side.

“With Sandpapergate back in South Africa a few years ago, how can the captain be allowed to take up another leadership role where a player like David Warner, who’s probably got the best cricket brain in the team, isn’t allowed to? If you’re going to ban a player but allow the captain to have another chance, it doesn’t make sense to me,” said Warne about the matter.

Candice Warner reveals about David Warner’s Big Bash future

Candice Warner, the wife of David Warner meanwhile, said that her husband might never play the Big Bash League (BBL) ever again and added that this will disappoint a lot of kids who love T20 cricket.

“It is disappointing because at this stage when David decides to retire from Test cricket, he won’t play Big Bash. And that’s really disappointing for the Australian fans and kids and anyone who loves T20 cricket – the fact that David Warner will never play Big Bash again,” said Candice Warner.

Candice also added that the Big Bash is a long tournament, and Warner might instead feature in some shorter tournaments in Dubai in January, and spend the Christmas with his family.

“You also have to consider that there’s so many leagues around the world that are shorter than the Big Bash. The Big Bash is a very long tournament. There are tournaments in Dubai in January that may be a better option with the family. David can still be with us Christmas and fly to Dubai early January for a shorter period of time,” concluded Candice Warner.
