India completed a resounding victory in the second ODI against Zimbabwe on Saturday, 20th August, to complete another series victory against the hosts. With the series already in the bag, the Indian side might be making a host of changes in the series finale, aiming to provide game time to the waiting players on the bench. Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa weighed in on India’s selection dilemma ahead of the final ODI.

There has been much chatter on social media revolving around the omission of Rahul Tripathi, who had an impressive outing in the IPL 2022 but hasn’t got a look in the national team as of yet. Ruturaj Gaikwad is another batter who has been waiting on the fringes since his T20I series against South Africa post the IPL.

Robin Uthappa reckoned that both the talented batters should be given an opportunity in the final game of the series and it will be unfair if they are not included in the team. But the veteran batter also opined that leaving out Shubhman Gill and Ishan Kishan will be equally unfair since they won’t be getting first-team action once the senior players return to the fray.

“As far as batting is concerned, I don’t know if they will make too many changes. Shahbaz may get a game, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi have been waiting in the wings for a while. It will be unfair if they don’t get a game and it will also be unfair to the youngsters who are playing right now. Ishan Kishan has got one innings to bat, so if he gets replaced and somebody else comes in instead of them, they would feel undone as well. So, it’s a hard one to pick, to be very honest,” Uthappa was quoted as saying to Sony Sports Network.

I think Avesh Khan will get a game and Prasidh might get a break: Robin Uthappa

Uthappa also stated that the team management might opt to give rest to Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, who have played in the opening two games and might need some time off to freshen up. He believes that Deepak Chahar will return for the final game and Avesh Khan might also get a game to be played on Monday, August 22.

“Definitely, I think Chahar will come back into the frame, I think Avesh Khan will get a game and Prasidh might get a break. Maybe Siraj could also get a break, Shardul would play, I think. They have anyway decided to rotate the fast bowlers so that everyone remains fresh,” Uthappa added.
