England batsman James Vince was disappointed for missing out on a well deserved century in the ongoing first Ashes Test in Brisbane at the Gabba. Vince was run-out off a direct hit by Nathan Lyon on 83 as he looked set for his maiden Test ton on his Ashes debut. However, the cricketer from Hampshire was happy after a strong show from him and hoped he could build on this innings in the series now.

Vince came out after England lost Alastair Cook early after opting to bat first but settled in quickly to blunt the Aussie attack. He weathered the bowling early on and then latched onto the full-length deliveries with fluent cover drives. He and Mark Stoneman put on a three-figure stand for the second wicket which put their side in a strong position. Unfortunately, both of them were sent back by the fired up Australians after their respective half-centuries.

I stuck to my game plan

James Vince was happy after his resilient knock in his first Ashes Test but was equally disappointed for missing the opportunity to score big. “”It’s disappointing but at the start of the day if you’d offered me that I would have taken it. Hopefully, the team can kick on in the morning. I stuck to my game plan pretty well throughout, so there’s lots to build on for me,” he said while speaking to BT Sport after the end of the first day’s play.

Both the teams shared the honours on the opening day of the series as England finished on 196/4 with Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali looking solid in the middle. But the day could’ve been even better for the visitors if Vince hadn’t misjudged a quick single. Even Joe Root missed out but he got a ripper off a delivery from Pat Cummins. England would now look to post a good first innings total as the pitch has already started to turn.
