After a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of India in the longest format of the game, England began their limited overs leg with redemption on their minds. After winning one and losing one in the two warm-up ties, England came to Pune with hopes of upstaging a resurgent India who took the field for the first time after Virat Kohli was appointed as the limited overs captain.

Before coming into this match, India had lost both the matches they had played at Pune before. Kohli, captaining India for the first time after being appointed on a full term basis won the toss and put the visitors in. Openers Jason Roy and Alex Hales began pretty well with Roy making the bulk of the scoring. He struck a boundary in the opening over and followed it up with two more in the next over.

Hales too struck a four of Hardik Pandya but just when he was slowly coming into his groove an exceptional display on the field by Jasprit Bumrah send him packing to the pavilion. It was pure magic from the lanky fast bowler as he directly hit the stumps from the deep.

It was the 2nd delivery of the 7th over when Roy shuffled across and tucked a delivery towards the fine leg with soft hands. Bumrah covered a lot of ground and swooped it from the fine leg region and threw it at the non-striker’s end. Hales wasn’t expecting Bumrah to throw at his end as Roy was the man who was running towards the danger end. Hales didn’t even dive and the ball hit the stumps directly. Though the 3rd umpire had a little issue with the decision as Kohli and the onfield umpire had blocked the cameras but he eventually ruled it in favour of the fielding team relying on the illuminating of the LED stumps.

England rode on useful contributions from Jason Roy and Joe Root in the top of the order and a late charge by Ben Stokes to finish their allotted 50 overs at a mammoth 350/7. While Roy and Root chipped in with 72 and 78 respectively, Ben Stokes was the one who added late impetus to the innings with his swashbuckling 62 of 40 balls which propelled the visitors to the 350 mark.
