The Kolkata Knight Riders are on a winning rampage this season, having won 3 of their 4 games so far. While a lot of talk often revolves around MS Dhoni’s captaincy, Gautam Gambhir, and impressive captaincy in IPL goes unnoticed. Gambhir has led the KKR side to 2 successful IPL campaigns, winning in 2014 and 2012.
In the current season too, the skipper is leading from the front. With scores of 34, 90*, 64 and 38* in the last four innings, Gambhir is among the top run-getters this season. Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently said that Gautam Gambhir is on the verge of a national side return.
Talking to the TOI about the same, the Delhi opener said that he does not expect his IPL performances to earn him a comeback. He also said that just because he is scoring heavily, people are talking about his comeback. He further stated that such remarks of making a comeback doesn’t bother him, no matter from whom it comes.
“It doesn’t matter what people say. All that matters is what I have to do for KKR. I don’t listen to what people say, whoever it is,” quoted the KKR skipper.
Gautam Gambhir stressed on the fact that at the moment all that he is concentrating on is playing well for KKR. “Only because I have scored runs, people are saying I am not far away and all that stuff. For me, I think it is about doing the job for KKR and that is my topmost priority right now. My job is to score runs as a batsman and that is what I am trying to do, irrespective of whether I make a comeback or not,” the 34 year old added.
The Knights have won all their games this season while chasing. Commenting on this, the KKR opener said that this is just an emerging trend and the teams now back themselves to chase down big scores.
“I think people have become smarter. They now know how to chase down a big total.Earlier 9 or 10 runs per over was difficult to do it now people take it till the end and feel that 10 runs per over can be chased,” Gambhir said.
Gambhir also talked about the performance of his team and said it is important to continue building the momentum. He looked satisfied with the performance but believes the best is yet to come.
“We are playing well and still early into the competition. We need to continue playing well. We got to learn from last year when we were right on the top till the 12th game and suddenly we didn’t play well in the last two games and couldn’t qualify for the knockouts. We need to take that into account and keep building the momentum. We have played reasonably good cricket, but the best is yet to come,” he added.
