Former Australian captain Ian Chappell termed the past players of Australia as ‘PR Machine’ for Langer as they slammed Cricket Australia and the team members for not supporting Langer publicly. Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Mitchell Johnson, Adam Gilchrist,

and Shane Warne have all been critical of the way the Australian side has been handling their head coach in public while Test skipper Pat Cummins recently voiced out of not coping up with Langer’s traditional methods.

Langer stepped down from the position despite being offered a short extension period after his tenure has come to an end and Andrew Mcdonald will be the interim head coach for Sri Lanka and Pakistan series. This is not the first time that the Australian cricketers haven’t backed their head coach as they have been similar instances in 2019 as well while Chappel has thrown his weight behind the players for showing honesty.

The captain has got to get the coach that he gets on with: Ian Chappell

Chappell mentioned that the players including skipper Cummins should be credited for being honest about Langer’s coaching methods and called the former Australian teammates of Langer as ‘PR Machine’. He added that Cummins is entitled to get the skipper he wants to work with and should not be compromised on it.

“It’s easy to lambast Cricket Australia, because they are not very good, and it was only to be expected, their reaction,” Chappell told the Wide World of Sports this week.

“What annoys me is two things; the fact Pat Cummins, who has probably been as honest as you can be in this sort of thing, that he’s copped a bit of a pasting and the Justin Langer PR machine has been at work, and in a lot of cases that’s been believed.”

“And within reason, I think the captain has got to get the coach that he gets on with and works well with,” he added

Under Langer, Australia went on to win the T20 World Cup 2021 last year and hammered the England side in the recent Ashes 4-0 as well. Brendon McCullum was in support of Cummins as well that Langer’s overseas Test records as a coach weren’t as good as they should have been after suffering a series loss to Pakistan 0-1 and a 2-2 draw in the Ashes.
