Former Australian opener Justin Langer is all set to coach the national side against West Indies in the ODI series. Darren Lehmann will temporarily hand over the reins to Langer, who is expected to be favoured by Cricket Australia as Lehmann’s successor.
Lehmann’s break in June will come before a tour of Sri Lanka which he said would last two and a half months. “We’re back for about 10 days and then South Africa,” he said. “Then the home summer. You have to make sure you’re fresh as best you can.”
Lehmann, who made a successful transition to the national side after guiding Queensland and Brisbane Heat, admitted it was a big jump. “You’ve got responsibilities not only to the team but you’ve also got contracted players who are not in the squad,” he said. “Delivering messages, whether you’re in or you’re out.
“Where you can improve, also dealing with the six states underneath you,” he added. “Communication is probably the biggest thing but JL will handle that fine.”
If Lehmann stayed on until the next Ashes tour he would have been in the job for six years, a marathon stint in this era of seemingly constant touring.
“I don’t think you can do it long term,” Lehmann said. “Not in international coaching because you’re away for 300 days a year. You’ve got to try and find a happy medium. I think once you’ve tried to tick off all the boxes you’d like as a coach and hopefully you’ve achieved them then it’s probably someone else’s turn.
