English opening batsman Keaton Jennings forayed into international cricket with a stunning century against India at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However, thereafter, he has been able to score only 374 runs in 21 innings at a horrendous average of 17.80. The left-hander is currently playing in England’s five-match Test series against India and has looked out of sorts.

In nine innings, the Johannesburg-born cricketer has crawled to 163 runs with a top score of 42 in the first match at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In the meantime, Michael Vaughan, the former English captain, has questioned his credentials at the international level and reckons that Alastair Cook’s retirement has forced the selectors to persist with the 26-year-old batter.

Is it worth the risk of playing somebody with baggage?

“Keaton is a concern. Is Keaton good enough? Is he getting picked by default because Alastair Cook is retiring? He will be under so much pressure in Sri Lanka,” Vaughan was quoted as saying in British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The Three Lions are scheduled to tour Sri Lanka in October and November this year for a five-match ODI series, a three-match Test series, and one T20I. Vaughan also feels that the Brits should opt for a couple of new faces in the tour and termed Jennings as a ‘baggage’ in red-ball cricket.

“Is it worth the risk of playing somebody with baggage? Or should they pick two fresh minds? Only those inside the dressing room know if Jennings has got something. I look at his game and he’s struggling,” added.

Ever since Andrew Strauss’ retirement, England have strained to find his replacement to bat with Cook and now with Cook’s retirement, a massive void in their batting lineup will be created.  The Poms are well and truly looking down the barrel in terms of finding two quality openers in the longest format.
