Alastair Cook will don the white jersey for England one last time in the fifth and final Test against India. He had decided to call it quits finally after an elongated dry run with the bat in the longest format. The left-handed opener has been no less than a legend for his country and will create a huge void at the top of the order in the line-up. Even Kevin Pietersen feels the same who has lauded Cook for his amazing mental strength while batting in Tests.

Cook will end his 12-year illustrious career as the highest run-getter for England in whites and sixth highest overall if he doesn’t manage to score more than 146 runs in his last game. He currently has 12,254 runs to his name and is behind the fifth-placed Kumar Sangakkara who amassed 12,400 runs for Sri Lanka in 134 Test matches. It seems tough for the veteran to score those many runs but that doesn’t take away from what he has achieved in his career.

Pietersen highlights some big numbers

Alastair Cook surely tops the charts when it comes to picking England’s batsman ever in their history. He is way ahead compared to the others in the run-making and still stands tall as the only cricketer from their country to go past the 10,000-run mark in Tests. His mentor Graham Gooch is the next with 8,900 and only Joe Root looks capable of current lot to go even close to him.

Kevin Pietersen highlighted the difference between Cook and others in the list and hailed him for whatever he’s done for England in his long career. Once, he was tipped to go past Sachin Tendulkar but the poor form in the last two years deserted him that opportunity. “Big numbers! BIG BIG numbers but his biggest and best attribute was his mental strength when batting. Happy retirement, Allistair!” KP’s tweet read.

It remains to be seen if Cook will be able to bring a fairytale ending to his career by smashing his 33rd ton in his final Test match.

Here’s Pietersen’s tweet for him:
