Former England batter Kevin Pietersen has revealed that he would like to help the young English batting side, hinting at a future coaching role. England went through a management change after winning only one out of their last 17 Test matches before the start of the English summer. Ben Stokes replaced Joe Root as captain and former Kiwi great Brendon McCullum came in place of head coach Chris Silverwood. ECB also appointed Rob Key as a new managing director last month after an embarrassing Test series defeat against West Indies.

The new management got an immediate return with a win in the first Test match against New Zealand at Lord’s. The cricketer-turned-commentator, Pietersen, hinted that England fans want to watch more entertaining cricket and that’s what McCullum has brought to the table.

“Brendon McCullum is a very interesting choice as England’s Test match coach. I think his brand of cricket is one that will be along the same lines as what Rob Key and Ben Stokes want. It’s also what the paying public wants to watch. Something needed to change, and this is a positive change,” Pietersen told Betway.

Kevin Pietersen opens up on helping the young England batting side

Pietersen has represented the English side in 104 Test matches and has scored 8181 runs at an average of 47.28. He remained connected with cricket via commentary after announcing retirement back in 2018. Pietersen does not have any prior coaching experience at any level but wants to contribute by helping the inexperienced England batters. He also revealed that he wants to back the English youngsters and help them build a positive mindset to think outside the box.

“I’d like to help this new young England batting side. I’d like to help them because I think what England need is they need a couple of coaches in there that are not scared to lose their job. But to really back them. Back the youngsters and give them that positive mindset on thinking outside of the box, being creative, and being positive.”

“So it’s not a position where you look at a lot of coaches around the world and you think ‘he needs that job’. I don’t need that job but I would like to help these guys,” Pietersen said on the Barmy Army’s podcast.
