The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently appointed former Bangladeshi skipper, Khaled Mahmud, as the technical director of the national side. His appointment in the role comes as a result of a vacant position of the head coach in the national side. Bangladesh are set to host Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in the coming days, and hence, the appointment has been made by the cricket board.

As per the recent reports in Cricbuzz, BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury confirmed the appointment of Khaled Mahmud as the technical director of the national side. He will continue to serve in the capacity until the board zeroes in on a new head coach for the Bangladeshi team.

“We have appointed him as the technical director of our national team. The board decided that if we don’t get any replacement of our head coach immediately Mahmud will act as the technical director for the upcoming home assignments,” Chowdhury quoted.

Roles and responsibilities

Speaking further on the role of Khaled Mahmud, Chowdhury mentioned that he will be responsible for taking all the key decisions for the team. Since the appointment of the coach will take some time, Mahmud will be at the helm of all decision making duties of the team.

“He will be holding the responsibility of guiding the national team and taking necessary decisions to take the team forward. As the tri-nation and the Sri Lanka series is not very far away, chances are slim that we will appoint a head coach immediately so in that sense he is in charge of Tigers,” he said.

More or less the head coach

Speaking on his appointment, Khaled Mahmud quoted that he is more or less going to do the duties of the head coach. He hopes to use all his cricketing knowledge to best use during his stint with the national side. He hopes to get new ideas on board when the Bangladeshi side hosts Sri Lanka in Test assignments.

“In a way, I will be fulfilling the role of head coach as there is no one [head coach] appointed for this series. Perhaps the name will be changed. Instead of head coach it will be technical director. But the job will be more or less the same like the head coach. I will try to use all my cricket knowledge during this series. We have got a new Test skipper and he is expected to bring some fresh ideas for our series against Sri Lanka,” Mahmud quoted.
