Every match will be a do-or-die encounter for Kolkata Knight Riders from here on as they have won just three of their first nine games this season. One more defeat might end their hopes of qualifying for the IPL 2022 playoffs and hence, Shreyas Iyer’s team must buckle up. The two-time champions will meet the high-flying Rajasthan Royals in Match 47 of the season at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Mumbai (May 2).

Fortunes of these two sides have been entirely different as the Men in Pink have been on a roll, winning six of their first nine games. They are just a couple of victories away from a place in the playoffs and would be raring to defeat KKR. Though the Sanju Samson-led side suffered a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Mumbai Indians in their last outing, they don’t have much to worry about. Notably, RR walked away with a narrow seven-run win when these two teams met earlier in the season.

After all, RR arguably have the most-balanced team in the tournament. While Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer and skipper Samson have been scoring heavily, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult and Ravi Ashwin have been brilliant in the bowling department. Although the lack of a potent fifth bowler has been a void, players in other departments have done the cover up.

As far as KKR are concerned, they also have some quality players in the ranks like skipper Shreyas Iyer, Aaron Finch, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. However, the team’s inability to perform as a unit has cost the big time. Constant tinkering with the playing XI hasn’t helped the side much either. Hence, the skipper and the team management must identify their best combination sooner than later.

Pitch and conditions

The tracks are slowing down with each game this season as several low-scoring clashes have been on display in recent days. The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium has been no different. Shot making hasn’t been easy as spinners get substantial assistance in the middle overs. However, owing to the dew factor, the toss-winning skipper must elect to bowl.

Playing combinations for KKR vs RR

Kolkata Knight Riders

As mentioned above, KKR must settle down and go with the same XI which they fielded in their last game against Delhi Capitals. Though there would be a temptation to bring back Pat Cummins, dropping any of the current overseas players would hamper the team combination.

Predicted XI: Aaron Finch, Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer (c), Nitish Rana, Baba Indrajith (wk), Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Umesh Yadav, Tim Southee, Harshit Rana

Rajasthan Royals

As far as RR are concerned, they can consider going back to Rassie van der Dussen as Daryl Mitchell hasn’t fired at number four. Any other changes aren’t likely to take place.

Predicted XI: Jos Buttler, Devdutt Padikkal, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Daryl Mitchell/ Rassie van der Dussen, Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, Ravichandran Ashwin, Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Sen
