Kumar Sangakkara dismisses rumours of entering politics

Most recently it was learned that the former Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman was contemplating joining politics.

Kumar Sangakkara is deemed to be one of the greatest cricketers Sri Lanka have ever produced. He made his international debut back in 2000 when his team locked horns with South Africa in Galle. Later in the same year, he played his maiden ODI against Pakistan, captained by Moin Khan, at the very venue. He didn’t backtrack ever since and turned himself into an indispensable member of the team.

He went on to play 134 Tests, 404 ODIs and 56 T20Is in which he notched 12,400, 14,234 and 1382 runs. The 40-year old boasts of 63 centuries and 153 half-centuries at the highest level. He last donned the national colours in the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Down Under. He finished as the second highest run-scorer with 541 runs in seven matches at a titanic average of 105.87.

During the tournament, he became the first batsman to score four consecutive centuries in the 50-overs format. Moreover, he also emerged as the batsman with the most number of tons in a single edition of the event since its inception in 1975. The 40-year-old currently plays for franchise cricket around the globe. He played for the Shoaib Malik-led Multan Sultans in the third edition of the PSL.

Sangakkara quashes all doubts

He was the franchise’s leading run scorer with 269 runs in 10 matches at an average of 33.62. Most recently it was learned that the former Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman was contemplating joining politics. The same was speculated to have fuelled from Imran Khan’s successful stint with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Khan became the Honourable Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Sangakkara recently opened up on the rumours and dismissed the same. Ranjan Parnavithana, a renowned sports journalist in Sri Lanka, confirmed the same in Twitter. The journalist took to Twitter and wrote, “*** Sangakkara denies all the rumours and gossip of entering politics.# @KumarSanga2 @SriLankaMirror @bbcsinhala @AzzamAmeen”
