The Rising Pune Supergiant, Royal Challengers of Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab, all received huge blows prior to the commencement of the IPL after the news of non-participation of their key players Ravichandran Ashwin, KL Rahul and Murali Vijay respectively, due to injuries.

Ravichandran Ashwin was diagnosed with Sports Hernia, which is a condition of chronic exercise-related supra-inguinal groin pain. The doctors suggest that it was due to the workload that Ashwin had to undergo this season and a surgery is not necessary as simple rest would suffice.

According to Dr. Subramanium, “It (sports hernia) is a terminology used by the doctors. How many overs (were) Ashwin bowled this season? It is not a serious injury. Ashwin needs rest now and no surgery is thought of,” as quoted by Deccan Chronicle.

Indian Test opening duo KL Rahul and Murali Vijay are also set to miss this season throughout the entirety due to injuries. The duo will seek treatment in London with assistance from Indian team physio Patrick Farhat. The Australian will accompany the batsmen to monitor their rehabilitation and fitness issues.

Quoting a BCCI source, “Look, this is not the first instance when the physio has travelled with the players on overseas trip. India are not playing any international matches before the IPL season is over and he will be handy to assess the fitness and rehabilitation issues and co-ordinate with the surgeons in UK.”

The anonymous source went on to state that it was due to the unavailability of the physio due to national duties with the Indian Cricket Team that he wasn’t able to accompany the Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma.

“The physio did not accompany Rohit Sharma for his surgery (last year) because he was busy in home matches and Rohit’s case was a sure surgery case, whereas Rahul’s shoulder injury and Murali Vijay’s wrist injury need consultation prior to their operation,” added the source.
