The October month was a treat for the Cricket fans which saw India playing Australia and New Zealand at home, Pakistan playing against Sri Lanka, South Africa taking on Bangladesh and Zimbabwe facing the Windies. Including the international fixtures, there were first-class competitions held in many countries during the month.

List of major records that were created and broken during the October month.

1 – Rangana Herath became the first left-arm spinner to take 400 wickets in Test cricket during the 1st Test against Pakistan. He is the 14th player overall and the 2nd Sri Lankan after Muttiah Muralitharan to take 400 Test wickets.

1 – Yasir Shah became the first spinner in Test history to take 5-wicket hauls in five consecutive Test matches. Three other bowlers (pacers) have taken 5-wicket hauls in six and more consecutive Test matches. He picked up a 5-wicket haul in the first innings of Sri Lanka’s innings in the 2nd Test.

1 – Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to be dismissed for a duck in 85 T20I matches during the 2nd T20I against Australia. It was also the first duck for Kohli in T20I cricket in the 48 innings. These are the most number of innings a player batted before recording his first duck in this format.

1 – Upul Tharanga became the first captain to carry the bat in an ODI game during the 2nd ODI against Pakistan. He is also the first Sri Lankan and overall the 11th player to carry the bat in ODI cricket.

1 – Faheem became the first Pakistan bowler and the 6th player to take a hat-trick in T20I cricket during the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka. He is also the first Pakistani to take a hat-trick in International cricket in 15 years as the last one was Mohammad Sami in March 2002.

1 – The 2nd T20I between South Africa and Bangladesh is the first in T20I history where the captains of both the sides got out in the bowling of opponent number. South Africa captain JP Duminy got out to Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan while Duminy returned the favour by dismissing Shakib in the 2nd innings.

2 – Shakib Al Hasan and Mehedi Hasan opening the bowling in the 1st T20I against South Africa is only the 2nd instance in International cricket in South Africa where spinners bowled the first two overs of an International game. It was in the 1906 Johannesburg Test match that two South African spinners starting off against England.

3 – For the 3rd time in 2017, Sri Lanka got whitewashed in a 5-match ODI series. They lost to South Africa in South Africa and against India at home earlier this year. They became the 1st team to be whitewashed three times in a 5-match ODI series in a year. Windies and Zimbabwe were whitewashed two times each in 5-match ODI series in 2008.

4 – The double century partnerships between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the 3rd ODI against New Zealand is the 4th between them in ODI cricket; the most for any pair. Three pairs have three double century stands between them. This was the 11th double century stand Virat Kohli was in involved in. No other player has been a part of more than seven double hundred stands.

5 – Shakib Al Hasan became the 5th player to complete 5000 runs and grab 200 wickets double in ODI cricket during 1st ODI against Bangladesh. He is the quickest to the double by taking only 178 matches. He is also the 2nd Bangladesh player after Tamim Iqbal to complete 5000 ODI runs.

5 – Number of consecutive centuries in ODI cricket for Babar Azam in UAE. He became the first player to score centuries in five consecutive ODI innings during the 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka. AB de Villiers scored four in a row in India between 2010 and 2011.

5 – Number of consecutive bilateral series victories in T20I cricket for Pakistan. They are the first team to win five bilateral T20I series in a row. Pakistan defeated England (1-0), Windies (3-0 and 3-10), World XI (2-1) and now Sri Lanka in their last five T20I series.

5 – Number of consecutive sixes David Miller has hit in the 19th over of their innings against Mohammad Saifuddin in the 2nd T20I. He is the 3rd player in T20I format and the 6th in International cricket to hit five sixes in a single over.

7/19 – Mujeeb Zadran’s bowling figures of 7/19 for Afghanistan U19s against Bangladesh U19s in the 4th ODI game are the joint 2nd best bowling figures in Youth ODI cricket. Irfan Pathan picked up 9/16 in 2003 while Ajantha Mendis also had figures of 7/19 in 2002.

7 – Number of captains who’ve led Sri Lanka in International cricket in 2017. These are the most number of captains for a team in a year across all formats. Zimbabwe and England had six captains each in 2001 and 2010 respectively. Thisara Perera became Sri Lanka’s 7th captain in 2017 during the 1st T20I against Pakistan.

7 – For the first time, India won seven consecutive bilateral series in ODI cricket with the series win against New Zealand. They have six consecutive ODI series on two different occasions. Virat Kohli also became the first Indian captain to win seven consecutive bilateral series.

19y 23d – At the age of 19 years and 23 days, Shadab Khan became the youngest to score the winning runs in a T20I game during the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka. Nepal’s Sompal Kami scored winning runs in 2015 against Netherlands at the age of 19 years and 151 days.

21 – Balls Usman Khan needed to complete his 5-wicket haul during the 5th ODI against Sri Lanka. These are the 3rd fewest any bowler taken for their 5-wicket haul in ODI cricket since 2001. Chaminda Vaas needed only 16 balls for his 5-fer in the 2003 World Cup game against Bangladesh while Netherlands’ Tim van der Gugten needed 20 balls against Canada in an ODI in 2013.

32 – Virat Kohli now has the 2nd most number of centuries in ODI cricket as he went past Ricky Ponting (30) during the 1st ODI against New Zealand and stands only behind Sachin Tendulkar (49).

35 – David Miller’s 35-ball century in the 2nd T20I against Bangladesh is the quickest in T20I history by breaking Richard Levi’s record of a century in 45 balls against New Zealand in 2012. His hundred is the joint 3rd quickest in overall Twenty20 cricket behind Chris Gayle (30) and Andrew Symonds (34).

42 – Innings Rohit Sharma needed to complete 2000 ODI runs in India. He became the fastest to complete 2000 ODI runs in India by breaking Sourav Ganguly’s (45) record in the 5th ODI against Australia.

165 – Rohit Sharma became the 2nd quickest to complete 150 sixes in ODI cricket during the 3rd ODI against New Zealand. He needed 165 innings for hitting his 150th ODI six while Shahid Afridi needed only 160 innings.

194 – Innings Virat Kohli needed for completing 9000 ODI runs. He is the quickest to reach the milestone by bettering AB de Villiers, who took 205 innings.

202 – AB de Villiers became the 6th player hit 200 sixes in ODI cricket during the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh. He needed 214 innings to complete 200 sixes; the 2nd quickest after Shahid Afridi (195).

256* – Baheer Shah’s 256* for Speen Ghar Region against Amo Region is the 2nd highest individual score for any player on first-class debut. Amol Mazumdar scored 260 on his FC debut. Baheer recorded the innings in the Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament in Ghazi Amanullah Khan Town.

279 – The 279-run chase by South Africa without losing a wicket in the 1st ODI against Bangladesh is the highest for any team in List A cricket. Delhi chased down 275 runs against Punjab in 2008 with help of an unbeaten 277-run stand between Aakash Chopra and Shikhar Dhawan.

282* – Amla-de Kock’s 282-run stand is the highest for any wicket for South Africa in ODI cricket. Their previous highest was 256* between JP Duminy and David Miller for the 5th wicket against Zimbabwe in 2015 World Cup. It is also the 3rd highest opening stand in ODI cricket.

374 – Number of consecutive International matches that Mahela Udawatte missed before playing in the 1st T20I against Pakistan. Only Windies’ Floyd Reifer (380) missed more consecutive Internationals for his team than Udawatte. The 73 T20Is he missed are also the 2nd most behind Liam Plunkett’s 74 T20I.
